The Affogato experience has been referred to as a metaphor for all the amazing experiences of life: fleeting, defying description, yet amazing in its ability to awaken the senses. People talk about getting off a plane in the tropics as having that same effect. The air hits the olfactory system with sensations, not simply with, say, the smell of warm jasmine.
Anyone who has had the 90 or so second encouter with a bitter sweet Affogato may be at a loss for words to describe the allure. Italians have known about the seductiveness of food pairings for centuries and we now benefit from those explorations. They recognize the joy of blending the homemade with the freshly brewed, the very hot with the icy cold in one blast of unpretentious flavour. Though fleeting, it’s worth every ounce of effort and the Moveable Feast is grateful for the inspiration!
